First version that works. There are some inefficiencies that need to go.
Also it doesn't yet un-collapse nodes when there's no need to do so.

Although, experimentally, it doesn't appear that the collapsing feature
gets used much. If I bring bits_per_level down to 4, it seems to end up
a bit more useful.
